Making a CD appendable

When using the CD burning function built into XP, I used to be able to leave a data CD-R appendable. That is, I could add additional files later. Now I cannot. Is this a glitch in the software or is the built-in CD burning function meantonly to close all burned CDs? If it is possible to leave a CD appendable, how?
