    Hi martofbristol,

What is the version of operating system installed on your computer?

    1. If you are using Windows 7, you may run Windows Update troubleshooter that would help us diagnose the issue better.

    Open the Windows Update troubleshooter:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Open-the-Windows-Update-troubleshooter

    1. If you are using Windows Vista, you reset Windows Update components and check if you still get the error message.

Click on the Fix it button in the article below to do that automatically or you may do it manually as well. For more information refer to the article below:

Is Vista SP1 or SP2 installed?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current?  What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?  What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?
