Receiving error code: 1606 when trying to install program

I have received an error 1606 message once before, and went through the process of editing the registry, and it solved the problem I was having.  However, now when I attempt to install the turbo tax 2008 edition I am receiving another error 1606 message.  But when I go into the registry, all the entries are fine, they match perfectly with the table entries provided by Microsoft.

How do I fix this problem, if the solutions aren't even necessary?

This is the exact error message I am getting:

ApplicationController: MSI Install Exception occurred: Microsoft Installer error: 1606, with error code: 1606

Hi Kisuru,

1. Is this the first time you are installing Turbo Tax on the computer?

2. Are you able to install other programs on the computer?

While searching on the TurboTax website I came across a solution for the error message which you have already tried as you mentioned.

Error 1606: Could not access network location

I would suggest that you download and install the windows installer cleanup utility later launch the cleanup utility from the start menu and then remove the entries for the software then restart the computer for changes to take effect and now try reinstalling the software and check.

Description of the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

For additional support try posting your query in the Turbo Tax community forums.

Hope this helps!

    Halima,

I followed your directions and it got me a little further, but while the screen for the cleanup utility popped up and said it was computing space requirements, another error message popped up, much like the initial problem I'm trying to fix, the error message reads:

Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\

If this error code is preventing me from downloading the tool I need to fix it, how do I fix it when the manual method usually suggested for this error code appears fine.

Would going in to the registry and deleting the APPDATA and putting it back again, even if it appears fine, fix the problem, or make it worse?

    Hi Kisuru,

With the User Account Control (UAC) enabled in Windows Vista, you may be denied write access to the Program Files directory and its sub-directories by default. The error above occurs when the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility's setup script (StartMSI.vbs) attempts to copy the extracted files from the Temporary folder to the C:\Program Files\MSECache\WICU3 folder.

To resolve the problem, you need to install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility as administrator. To do so, right-click the setup file (msicuu2.exe) and choose Run as Administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

    Hope this helps!

    Hi Halima,

    1. Yes, this is the first time installing Turbo Tax.
    2. Some programs, yes, and others, no.  I've had issues installing Zune, the Bing Toolbar, and now Turbo Tax.

I tried to download and install the windows installer cleanup utility, and a window popped open saying this.

    Script:

    C:\Users\private\Appdata\local\temp\IXP000.Tmp\StartMsi.vbs

    Line: 17

    Char: 1

    Error: Permission denied

    Code: 800A0046

    Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error

    What do I do now?
