merkel,

in addition to what Andre mentioned

8020000D BG_E_DESTINATION_LOCKED

some other program like chkdsk is currently running which locked the disk and so BITS is not able to write to the disk.

if the issue is not being caused by a scheduled check disk, then "something" else is locking the disk or preventing BITS from writing to the download location.

that "something" could be security software [antivirus/3rd party firewall/etc], malware, or the hard drive may have issues.

Reboot

open the services console. *Right* click computer either on the desktop or start menu and choose 'Manage'; allow the user prompt; open services and applications; then services.

click on background intelligent transfer service and see if you are able to start it.

Reboot

Then try to update again.

Please let us know what fixes the problem or if the problem remains

I had the same issue on Vista 64 (and BITS was running), so I tried this fix.  I stopped the service called "Windows Update" and created a new SoftwareDistribution folder as described.  Then instead of the error message I got "Update not required" which is correct as I had previously installed it manually due to the Windows Update problem (not sure why it was being listed at all).

So I believe this may be a solution.  Have to see how it goes as Windows Update seems to work for a while for me after rebooting and then stops but these steps definitely seemed to get it going for now.

    Thanks

    S.

Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. (Because of possible folder corruption or other errors.)

    Click Start, Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

    Click OK.

    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.

    Click Stop.

Stopping the service will take a moment.

    Rename the “SoftwareDistribution” folder:

    a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK.

    b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename.

    c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder.

Create a new folder called "SoftwareDistribution"

    Click Start. Choose Run.

In the Run box, type services.msc.

    Click OK.

    Right-click the Automatic Updates service.
