Java based programs lock up computer

Whenever I try to use a Java based application my computer locks up.

What happens is that after starting a Java program my computer will start to lock up, not allowing me to click on anything but I can still move my mouse. After clicking about 6 times I hear a beep and my computer fully locks up. I am still able to hear sounds from other things running on my computer but I am unable to move my mouse or see anything happen on my screen.

This also happens when I try to play games such as Second Life and Half Life.

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit.

Hi zealot1234,

Welcome to Windows Vista Answers Forums!

Which program are you exactly trying to run?

You may try to uninstall and reinstall Java and check whether you can resolve the issue.

Uninstall and Reinstall Java ****

  1. Click start
  2. Type appwiz.cpl in Start Search
  3. Search for Java software product that is on your computer. Select that and Right click to uninstall the package.

Restart the computer and check.

If the normal uninstallation process (as mentioned above) fails, then you may try Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.

Removal instructions:

  • Download the Microsoft Installer Clean Up utility file and save it on your desktop
  • Double click on executable file. The installation process will start. Follow the instructions accordingly
  • Once installation process is over, go to Start -> All Programs -> Run Windows Install Clean Up utility
  • This will launch the Windows Installer Clean Up utility dialog box
  • Under the Installed products list, select the desired Java version that you want to remove
  • Right click and select Uninstall
  • Restart the Computer.
