DirectX Web Setup stalls while Installing Components

I'm trying to get several games running, but am blocked by DirectX 9c requirements. My machine is Windows 7 so it has DX11 installed. I went here to download the web installer:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

When I run the installer, it downloads the components, then hangs on "Installing Components." It shows the message "Copying files..." and 1.0.2910.0/Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3DX.xml

One of my CPUs is maxed out running dxwsetup.exe*32 and it does this for hours. My computer is a Dell with 64-bit Windows 7.

Are there instructions anywhere for updating DirectX by hand?

Thanks for any help.

Steve, thanks for your suggestion. Running the clean boot didn't fix the problem, but it got me thinking in the right direction.

I ended up putting in the Win7 disk and "repairing" it. It's really a re-install, but programs and data are preserved.

It took a few hours to go through the installation, but after that, I ran the DirectX Web Setup without a hitch. Played some BioShock 2 last night!

Thanks

    Hi,

I'm currently trying to play some of my older games and am running into this same issue: I run the DirectX web setup using IE9, and I get to the screen with the progress bar. I see a message (Initializing) then the setup appears to begin, but stalls at the same place:

    1.0.2910.0/Microsoft.DirectX.Direct3DX.xml

So this is where my experience diverges from the user above ... Clean booting didn't work for me either, so I tried repairing as well. However, when I got to my repair options, I only had essentially three choices: to a) diagnose my startup [no issues there], b) restore from a previous point [up to 5 days ago], or c) restore from an image I'd made before [I'd never made one before]. I didn't see anything like what the user above described (i.e. reinstalling the OS without touching programs/user data). Since there are no issues with my current setup (with the exception of DirectX), I chose not to run any of these repair options.

In any event, I'd like to dig deeper and find out if there is a way for me to get DirectX 9 working without reinstalling Windows 7. Can we re-open this?

    Thanks!

    Charlie

    Hi,

Check if all the drivers are up to date.

If not I would suggest you to update the drivers.

Try installing the web installer in clean boot and check.

    Hope it helps.
