Hard drive pointers and data?

So here is an interesting question. You are booted to HDD "A" and want to access a movie or song or any other file on HDD "B". When you open that file does HDD "A" make a pointer directing to HDD "B", or does it copy the data from "B" to "A" in a temp folder and deletes it after used? Or what? Computer also has 3 GB of RAM. (Not sure if that was nessacery)

If it copied from B to A, I wouldn't have used my other drive to hold all my backup dvds.

Hope this answer your question.

Thanks
