I have tried to install .net Framework 3.5 Service Pact 1, etc. many times and end up with error code 3701.  I see that many of you have had the same problem.  Is it likely microsoft will correct this?  I do not care to try to do anything complicated to install this.  Is this update necessary?

Hi Doyce

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum!

I would recommend that you uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework installed on your computer, then try to install .NET Framework 2.0 followed by the latest versions of the .NET Framework (s). Install Windows installer clean-up utility, and uninstall .net frame work completely. Though the software was uninstall previously, traces of the software would be used by other programs Windows Installer Clean up utility will help uninstalling a program completely. Here is the below link for the same: Description of Windows Cleanup Utility http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

You can download the .NET Framework ver. 2.0 from the link below:

    Thanks, Mike,

I did manage to install .NET Framework 3.5 and its Service Pack.  However, Windows Cleanup Utility did not work for me.  I installed the Cleanup Utility fine, but the list of programs that I could cleanup did not include .NET Framework, presumably because my computer thought it uninstalled it before, when the installation failed.  Anyway, I used dotnetfx_cleanup_tool, shown in another answer and then followed your instructions to download and install .NET Framework 3.5 and its Service Pack.  It worked!

However, I then tried to install Windows Vista Service Pack l (KB036330) and had the same problem of not being able to install it.  I tried the System Update Readiness Tool for Window Vista, but the Service Pack still wouldn't install.  Any suggestions?

    Thanks, Doyce
