I deleted an ad-hoc network (its name was "Z") few days ago but it still appears in available networks when i click "Connect To". I have looked at "Control Panel\Network and Internet\Manage Wireless Networks", it does not show any ad-hoc network. I have restarted my notebook few times but this network is still present. My other notebook can also see this network.

Hi SaaDua,

An ad hoc network is automatically deleted after all users disconnect from the network or when the person who set up the network disconnects and goes out of range of the other users of the network, unless you choose to make it a permanent network when you create it.

Refer the link below for more details:

Set up a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network**http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Set-up-a-computer-to-computer-ad-hoc-network**

You may try the following steps:

  1. Click ‘Start’ and select ‘Control Panel’.
  2. Select Classic View and Network and Sharing Center > Customize > Merge or delete network location > Highlight the network then click Delete.
  3. Click the Advanced button.
  4. Make sure 'Access point networks only' is selected.

You may also refer the TechNet link below for a similar issue:

Hope this helps!

I know this is way after the fact to the question above (2.5 years later). I'm posting this for others who have the same problem as above as I did.

I tried to follow Gokul's advice but didn't see what he was referring to.

According to everyone's advice, they say to go to "Manage Wireless Networks" to delete it but the one you created isn't there and it still shows up in the "Connect To a Network" window.

I had the same issue and this answer is totally undocumented [Well, to my research anyway]. Here we go:

    1. Get to the Network sharing center via the control panel or by clicking on the Wi-Fi icon in the system tray.
    2. See the House or the Bench Icon? Click on it. (Nowhere in any searches for help says to do this.)
    3. At the bottom of the window that just popped up click on "Merge or Delete Network Locations". I bet that's what you've been looking for.

You'll see many many others you didn't knew you had too. Delete them. Leave the ones you visit, like attwifi. A lot of companies use this including Starbucks and other public places. It won't hurt if you deleted all of them. Keep yours though.

    Hope this helped you.

    Hi Kevin,

It appears that the method given by Derick just removes the network from the list and does not actually remove the Ad Hoc network you created. Well I just tried something and it worked and Ad hoc network is permanently removed now and does not show in the list which i click on the network or wifi icon.

Go to Control Panel>Network and Sharing Center. Then on left side click on"Manage wireless networks". From there, right click on the Ad-hoc nework or any network you want to remove and just remove it.

    Cheers. :)

I have the same problem and am running on Windows 7 Home Premium and I do not see the word Customize or the link Customize anywhere on the Network and Sharing Center page: http://i35.tinypic.com/25tjfxu.jpg On top of that I have gone into 'Change adapter settings' and 'Manage Wireless Settings numerous times and cannot find the wireless ad-hoc network that I created and made. For me I was trying to test the ad-hoc feature to see if it would work with my printer so that I could wireless-ly connect to it without the hassle of a wire. It worked, but now I want to delete it and create one with the same exact name only with a password.Any help would be much appreciated. you can email me to: *** Email address is removed for privacy ***
