My HP Support Advisor program quit working properly.  An HP tech recommended I download the latest HP Support Assistant from the HP website, which I did.  Only problem was during the installation, an error code 998 appeared, and the installation was not finished.  How do I resolve this problem?

    Hi,

It can be due to memory access issues.

Check in program files and uninstall the program. Redownload the program and install it in clean boot.

Follow these steps to perform a clean boot:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,

type the password, or click Continue.)

    1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    4. Click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart
    6. Log back into your Account.

After you restart the computer, try to install HP support assistant again and check if it helps.

    To restore your Normal startup:

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,

type the password, or click Continue.)

    1. On the General tab, click Normal Startup.
    2. When you are prompted, click Restart.

If that doesn’t help, then you must get in touch with HP for further assistance.

    Afzal, you are a miracle-worker!

I did contact HP support earlier due to this problem, and their recommendation was to do a complete system recovery, retoring the PC back to factory condition (wipe out all software and files I loaded from the time I got the PC).  They said the 998 error code was a memory conflict caused by a corrupt registry, and the registry could not be fixed.  Hence I found this forum for one last shot at it before spending hours & hours redoing everything I previously set up do to a concern of a corrupt registry.

Your steps got the HP Support Assistant reinstalled without the error code 998.  After restoring the PC to the normal startup, it also functions just as it is supposed to.  And all other software continues to work as it always had (no new issues were created by fixing this one).

I can't tell you how happy I am that you helped me out, when all my contacts with HP could not.

You and this forum are fantastic!
