When I browse a folder with various file types I want to sort it by type, as I used to do in previous versions of Windows, but this option is not enabled from default. I chose the option to appear but if I restart my computer this option is not there anymore and I have to re-select it. Any ideas ?

Hello pcnwm,

The SORT BY/TYPE option is not part of the Sort By menu, by default. It has to be added manually. The column names listed in the View menu bar will depend on what you have the folder template set as.

If you have manually enabled this and disappears after ever restart, I suggest that you follow the below steps to fix it.

1.      Open Windows Explorer, click on Organize on the left hand corner.

2.      Select ‘Folder and file options’.

3.      When the "Folder Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "View" tab.

4.       Underneath "Advanced Settings", check "Always Show Menus".

5.       Click on apply and click on OK.

Check if you are able to sort by type.

Hi, I see this thread is seven years old but strangely I've been experiencing this issue on win10 recently. I thought this option (to group or sort files according to different criteria in a folder) was available normally, and as a matter of fact it had always been like that since I can remember on win 8 or 10. only recently I realized it has not been the case but after enabling "always show menus" in options it's finally back so you're answer was really helpful and thanks for that!

This is exactly the sort of thing that annoys me most about Microsoft products.  Everyone gets used to doing things a certain way, but the software designers are just not happy until they've messed about with it.  Consequently we are all on a constant re-learning journey every time we get updated software.

MS Office is a prime example; everyone was used to the old way of arranging a window (even third party software adopted the same layout) and it worked well.  But it just couldn't be left that way... Oh no, someone had to mess about with it to justify their salary and so we got the "ribbon" layout.  Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with the post-2007 layout, it's just different.  All this means that we all had to re-learn the new layout for no real gain.

Please program designers, when things aren't broken, don't try and fix them!
