Time Executable has stopped working

In the past week, I started to get an error message on start-up which says "Time Executable has stopped working". In the forum, I noticed some others had the same problem. Using msconfig and disabling certain start-up items (by process of elimination), I have isolated the problem to a file called DLCGCATS. Although I have now stopped this file from loading (and creating the error window), I would like to either repair it or remove it altogether. How can I do that? The manufacturer is listed as "Unknown" and the command for the file is "rundll32 C:\windows\system32\spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\DLCGtime.dll, _RunDLLEntry@16". Your assistance to help me repair or remove this program would be greatly appreciated.

The solution is:

  1. Start->Run>MSCONFIG->Startup.
  2. Find the file DLCGCATS and uncheck it (disables).
  3. Re-boot.
  4. Problem goes away on start-up

Please note this file belongs to Dell and I believe they have now issued a new driver which will also solve the problem. Be sure to update all your drivers if you are using a Dell PC.

    Hi JohnD,

Thank you for the advice. This is similar to the advice previously given to me by SawthiB which led me to the clean boot procedure you mentioned. By doing this, I was able to determine that the start-up file called “DLCGCATS” causes the problem. The “next step” solution from Microsoft according to the clean boot procedure is:

    “Step 6: Resolve the problem

After you determine the startup item or the service that causes the problem, contact the program manufacturer to determine whether the problem can be resolved. Or, run the System Configuration Utility, and then click to clear the check box for the problem item.”

Since there is no manufacturer listed for “DLCGCATS” (it says manufacturer unknown), I have no one to contact. Furthermore, I do not want to keep the start-up check box permanently cleared as this is just a temporary workaround. I want to remove the “DLCGCATS” file altogether so I can then load all start-up items normally by selecting the “Normal Star-up” blob. How can I remove this file completely so I can do this?

    Thank you,

    StanleyJ

    Hi StanleyJ,

Let's try clean booting the system to remove 3rd party software and see if that clears up the problem.

Follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”

    ·         Click the Start orb on your Desktop

    ·         Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    ·         On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    ·         Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box

    ·         Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All

    ·         Click OK

When you are prompted, click Restart.  Did you get the same error?

If this does resolve the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

How to set your computer back, to boot normal:

    ·         Click the Start orb on your Desktop

    ·         In the Start Search box. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    Click the General tab.

    ·         Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK

    ·         When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer.

Hope this will fix it for you. Please post back and let us know.

    Hi Sawthi B,

Thank you for the advice. I checked my start-up item list and could not find the offending item. And since the file properties does not list the manufacturer or even the application DLCGCATS is used with, I have no clue how to get rid of it. Any further advice how I can safely remove this file so it won;t run during start-up?

    Thanks,

    StanleyJ

    Hi StanelyJ,

Welcome to Microsoft Vista answers Forum!

Since you have figured out which application is causing the issue by performing clean boot, you may remove that startup item

Click Start>> click All Programs >> click Startup.

If you find the same startup item>> right click on the startup item >> click Delete.

Now restart the computer and check if the issue is resolved or not.

    Hope this information is helpful.

Let me know if this worked.

    Thanks and Regards:
