original title: backup: no such interface supported error 0x80004002

I had backup running for a while, but went to make a change and now when i click on change settings, i get that error.

Ive tried everything i've been able to find online, checking services etc.

i tried sfc but i get 'windows recource protection could not start the repair service' so i tried booting from the win7 dvd and running sfc from there but it found no issues.

I don't know what else to try??

i'm on win7 home prem 64bit

    Hi Ratty69,

Probably some application or service is blocking when you try to change the settings on the backup utility. I would suggest you to put the computer into a clean boot and then try to change the settings to see if you’re able to.

    Perform a clean boot

Note: Once the troubleshooting is over, reset the computer to start as usual.

Hope this information is helpful and let me know if you need any further assistance.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the reply.

date/time is fine, it keeps itself updated.

volume was on manual, so i started it.

backup was on manual started, so i restarted it.

no change, still getting the same error :(

    Hello, Ratty69

Ensure that the date and time are correct on your computer.

Check if the services required exist or not: go to Start, type services.msc in the search box and press enter. In the Services list, locate the following items:

    1.    Volume Shadow Copy

    2.    Windows Backup

If they exist, under Startup Type, both should say Manual. The status will most likely be blank, if this is the case, right click each and choose Start.

Let us know if there are any errors starting the services.

After they are started try going into your backup settings once more.

Let us know if the services do not exist.

    Hi Ratty69,

I would suggest you to try the steps mentioned below.

Step 1: Disable your anti-virus completely and then try to run the backup

Your virus scanner might be preventing you to run the backup. Disable your antivirus software and see if you can re-run the backup.

**Note:**Running the computer without firewall or the anti-virus software is a potential threat to the computer; make sure to enable the security software after completing the troubleshooting steps and after identifying the issue.

Step 2: To execute a command

    a.    Click on Start; in the start search type cmd

    b.    Right click on cmd.exe and “Run as administrator”

    c.    Type the following command and press Enter.

    net localgroup administrators NetworkService /ADD

Now try running the backup and check if you’re able to run the backup.

Step 3: Perform a system restore to the date when the backup was working fine

    Additional information:

When you receive this error “Windows Resource protection could not start the repair service” during system file checker scan, then you need to check the status of the Windows Module Installer Service in Microsoft Services Console. The service should be running and the service type should be set to manual.

Hope this information is helpful and let me know if this worked.
