Call to GetTempFileName() failed!

I get this error when trying to run an older piece of software using compataility mode ( Win98 ).

Can someone please tell me what the problem is?  I'm guessing that it's some kind of permission issue, but everything I know to check seems okay.

Env variables 'temp' and 'tmp' are paths that exist and are available.

Plenty of disk space.

Could this have anything to do with the file system?  Will compatability mode handle software for FAT32 running Win7 on NTFS?

Thank you for any assistance.

    Hi,

    a. Which application are you trying to run?

This issue is not related to providing permissions.

Did you try to run the game in Virtual XP mode as suggested by Swathi B Microsoft Support, Moderator.

Yes, you are right this error is related to SQL server.

Get back to us with the status after trying to run the game in Virtual XP mode.

    Regards,

Thank you the response!  The games are designed for 95/98, but I will give the XP mode a shot.

As for contacting the manufacturer, they've been gone for many years  ...  sigh.

Do you know exactly what causes this error?  When I search on it, I wind up getting result for SQL server.

Nothing that really tells me what's going on, or more specifically, what's not going on.

Thanks again, I'll post again after trying XP mode.

Update!  I see that you can install an older OS on Virtual PC, so I am going to try to install 98.

Update the second : 98 wouldn't work.  I was able to install right up to "Preparing Windows to run for the first time" and then it just sat there ... for WAY too long.  Had to delete it and uninstall the virtual machine.

I will try with the XP mode and see what happens.  It's worth a shot!

    Hi Busdriverfella,

    Step 1:

You may try installing XP mode and install the games and check if you are able to play the games without any issues.

Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7: **http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/install-and-use-windows-xp-mode-in-windows-7**

    Step 2:

This seems to be an issue if the games are not compatible with Windows 7. I would suggest that you contact the manufacturer of the game and check if there are latest updates and patches that are supported for Windows 7 and install the same and check.

    Thanks and Regards:

I'm getting this error when trying to run a number of games in compatability mode for Windows 98 from my Windows 7 box.

    In particular, Powerslide.

I've tried various compatability settings, and used the troubleshooter but still wind up with this same error.

The environment variables for temp and tmp are both valid and available.

    Please advise.

    Thank you for your time.
