Remote desktop local printer problem

I was using remote desk top with a vista machine as the client connecting to an XP machine. I wanted to print to my local printer. I went to Microsoft support and followed these instructions. Now when i connect to the remote desktop it does connect and shows the computer IP at the top of the screen but the log on screen never comes up. I do go through a VPN to connect and I can ping the computer but it just stays at the screen were the log in should come up next. I did have windows do a restore to the day before of the problem but still have the same problem. I belive that it has made a change in the registry causing the problem.  Thanks for any advice or help.

To resolve this problem on a computer that is not running Windows Server 2003, force all ports (including DOT4) on the client computer to be filtered for redirection. To do this, add a DWORD value named FilterQueueType to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR and set its value data to FFFFFFFF.

Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default\AddIns\RDPDR 3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4. Type FilterQueueType, and then press ENTER. 5. On the Edit menu, click Modify. 6. Type FFFFFFFF, and then click OK.

This enables all ports on the client to be redirected.

Hello Ed at Answers forum,

Thank you for using Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

I would like to verify some information to assist with this matter.  You have a computer with Windows Vista and you are using remote desktop into a computer using Windows XP.   Your computer running XP is this connected directly to the printer?  Are you able to print from your computer using XP successfully?

Is your printer connected using USB or Parallel Port?   Also do you have the drivers for the printer installed on your Vista machine?  Please let me know some more information.
