Original Title: BITS download problem!!!

Remember - This is a public forum so never post private information such as email or phone numbers!

Ideas:While inside a program I'm having problems downloading files from the internet.

  • The program is the new civilization 5 game. It has a built in game file update system.
  • Error message: The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header. Note: It has worked correctly 2 or 3 times out of the times I have tried to use it.
  • Recent changes you made to your computer: No recent major changes to computer.
  • What you have already tried to fix the problem: I tried to go to programdata\microsoft\network\downloads and delete the files there, but when I do it says they are being used by another program and can not be deleted: There was no other program running.

    Hi Carsomyr,

As you tried various troubleshooting steps to fix this issue and you experience this issue while you are within the game, it would be better that you contact the program manufacturer to obtain better assistance to fix this issue.

To start with Thanks for the the reply Divya R.

I'm using Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 on a 64-bit operating system.

So far I have tried all the above plus other suggestions with no solutions to the problem yet.

I have not had any issues with any other program. I also have a laptop that runs windows 7 and I have no issues with the program on there.

Like I said before it has worked correctly 2 or 3 times in the times I have tried using it.

Method 1: Tried turning off the firewall and that did not work.

Method 2: Checked it and BITS was already started ( Hit Restart anyways ).

Method 3: Downloaded the Vista fix - and received a message the update was not needed.

Thanks in advance for any further help on this issue.

    Hi SgtCiv,

    -      Which version of Operating system do you use?

    -      Are you able to download the files successfully without any issue from other sites?

    -      Do you get this error message only with while trying to download from this site?

    -      Were you able to successfully update the game file earlier?

You may experience this problem if a computer is behind a firewall or behind a proxy server.

**Method 1:**Turn off Firewall if any and check if it helps.

Note: Turning off the Firewall might make your computer (and your network, if you have one) more vulnerable to damage from worms or hackers. Make sure you turn on the firewall once you are done with the test.

If the issue is fixed, you may have to contact the program manufacturer to know about the settings that can be changed or if there are any other updates for this program.

If the issue is not fixed, follow the next method.

**Method 2:**Restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and see.

    a.    Click the Start button, and in the search box type in: services.msc

    b.    Press 'Enter' to open Services window.

    c.    Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Restart, or click Start if the BITS service is not running or has been disabled.

Method 3: If you are using Windows Vista Operating system, try the steps given in the link below:

An update is available to fix a Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) crash on a Windows Vista-based computer

If the above methods do not help you, contact the game manufacturer for further assistance on this issue.
