I would like to know if there is a way to add separators to the Windows 7 Start menu list of pinned items?

Hi,

In Windows, it’s not possible to add separators manually in the Start Menu list. The separators which are present is by design. However, if you want you may reduce the recent programs & add pinned items to the start menu by customizing the start menu.

For more information refer this link.

Customize the Start menu

Hope the information helps. Please post back and let us know.

Hold down SHIFT when you right-click and the "Pin to Start Menu" option magically appears...

This does not work.  I have an Excel program with thousands of lines of code and click a shortcut on the desktop to run it.  When I right-click the desktop icon as directed in your link, the option to Pin to Start Menu does not appear.  Same is true if I find the file directly, no Pin To Start Menu option.
