Windows backup Error Code: 0x8007007B

I have an external hard drive by Lacie and the drive letter is H for it on my system. I run the "Backup and Restore" program of Windows 7 and accept the default settings. I set the location for the backup to my Lacie(H) drive and start the backup process. The system starts backing up with the progress bar. After about 6-7 minutes, the red bar appears and the system tells "The last backup did not succeed successfully". On clicking for More Informtion, the system gives the following details:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect

Error Code: 0x8007007B

What on earth is wrong?

Hi,

Check to see if you have two C: drives in the listing with the same Volume label (see figure below). Deselect the checkbox for the duplicate volume, and enable the checkbox for the correct drive (the one with Windows logo).

Fig 2: System Restore enabled for the wrong drive.( Image is for system restore; in your case check under backup and restore)

If you don't find two volume labels then try the one explained below.

Not sure of solving the problem. But give it a try.Reset your backup to default and start over. Make sure that you have temporarily disabled any antivirus on the computer.

If  u look around here in the link there seems to be several different backup problems.

Lemme know of what happened

No I don't have any third party boot manager, and no other OS installed apart from Windows 7. I have two drives namely "C" and "D". The windows 7 is on C drive. However, what frustrates me is that I can't see any detailed log on the problem either? Can Microsoft support help.

Do you have any third party boot managers? Any other OS installed?

Is your Windows 7 partition set as active?

Complete backup does NOT work if Windows 7 system partition is not Active. So third party boot managers effectively DISABLE Complete PC Backup.

    Cheers!

Hi Varun, thanks for your detailed solution but unfortunatley the issue was not resolved. I did scan all the drives but no errors were found. I did use the manual option of setting up the backup. I chose to backup only the following:

    1- Drive C

2- Include a system image of drives: C

However, the backup again failed with the same error code. The added frustration is because of lack of any meaningful message. Anyway could you please ask me what else can I send. I went to the log folder C:\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup but the logs "etl" files and cannot be opened by a simple word processor. I am feeling quite handicapped.

thanks for your help and looking forward to your reply

    Hi AmmarK,

    Welcome to Microsoft Answers!!!

You can solve some computer problems by checking a drive or drives for errors. For example, you can check your computer's primary hard disk to fix some performance issues, or you can check an external hard drive if it's not working properly.

    1. Open Computer by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Computer.
    2. Right-click the drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check now.   If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select Automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will report problems but not fix them.

To perform a thorough check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the drive itself, and it can take much longer to complete.

To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

    1. Click Start.

Depending on the size of your drive, this might take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it is checking for errors.

Access the link below for more information on the above steps.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors

Once the above step is done then make sure you select the drives to backup manually by yourself than the option "Let Windows Select" option and proceed with the backup. And while doing so uncheck libraries options listed and select only the drives that you intend to backup as per the instructions suggested by Sneha in her post in the link below.

Access the link below and read through the response by Sneha  which seems to discuss about a similar issue

Let us know of what happens
