I get an error every time I bootup -

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\1.tmp is missing".

I click ok, then startup seemingly ok.  How do I get rid of this error ?  What's the file for ? Can anyone help ? (I'm on a dell inspiron 1100 laptop running Windows XP).  Thanks.

That file was probably part of a virus or spyware infection that was partially removed. Run a full virus/spyware scan.  If the problem still exists, use the free Autoruns  tool from Windows Sysinternals   to find and remove the reference to the file.
