self-extractor has stopped working

When I try to install programs that i have downloaded, the message:
Self-Extractor has stopped working
it asks me to close the program.
So I downloaded the Win32 installer fix, which I cannot run either!!
What now? I cannot put programs on including a new virus scan.

2009-07-21T15:17:54+00:00 I should also mention i am using Vista Home premium with Service Pack 1 on a Dell Inspiron 1545- which is just a few months old.
