Windows cannot access (insert computer name)__Please check spelling or there may be a problem with your network.

I am networking some new windows 7 machines to a pre-existing network with both Vista and XP computers already on it. I have set it up as a work network and opened the ports in our McAfee firewall that windows recommends. However while the older OS machines can access the windows 7 computers and  the win 7 computers can access the older OS, the windows 7 machines cannot access each other.

The computers show up on the network but when they try to gain access an error message pops up. I've even tried to uninstall McAfee but the problem persists. What is the problem?

    hey Jessi9,

dont know if you figured it out yet. i just installed windows 7 ultimate 64-bit 2 days ago and have been pulling my hair out over the same issue. everything seems to be configured correctly, right? i ended up staring at my network adapter setting for some time and realized the rest of my computers are not using TCP/IPv6, everything else is using v4.

    SOLUTION:

So go to your network card settings, scroll down the items and UNCHECK "Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Then click on Version 4 -> properties -> advanced -> WINS -> Make sure that the following is enabled, "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

    your computers show up now??

*also, sorry for proposing the previous post as an answer, i clicked it in error, and there is no way to undue it.

I've done that for both computers still nothing. They are displayed on the network display screen but when I click on them in order to open there share folders the "incorrect name" error message pops up and the troubleshooter doesn't register the problem. I can ping both computers using the IP address and when I turned on media streaming I could access those but the shared documents and printers remain mysteriously inaccessable.

    Hi Jessi9

Check the advanced sharing permission on the shared folder. Link you may refer to: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Share-files-with-someone

Try the below steps and check if it helps:

    1.          Take ownership of the folder

    i.           Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

ii.         Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

iii.       Click Edit, and then do one of the following:

iv.       To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, in Enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK.

    v.         To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner.

vi.       If you want to take ownership of the contents of the folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

vii.     Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message: You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

viii.   All permissions will be replaced if you click Yes.

ix.       Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

    Below link for reference: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Troubleshoot-access-denied-when-opening-files-or-folders

    2.           Give full permission to the folder. Steps to follow

    i.              Right click on the Folder select Properties

    ii.            Select Security tab

iii.           Choose Edit button(if prompted to click continue, please click on continue)

iv.           Select Add type in ‘Everyone’ (without quotes)

    v.            Click on Check names

    vi.           Click Ok

vii.          Under Group or user name select Everyone

viii.        Under Permissions for system check Allow full control.

Below link will help you learn more about it: Files and Folder Permission:

Still not working. I've updated to network adapter drivers and still whenever I click on the computer icon in the network display screen, the same error message pops up.

*Windows cannot access //COMPUTERNAMECheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.Details:Error Code: 0x80070035the network path was not found.*When I click diagnose the computer can't identify the problem.
