Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / Command Prompt and right click on command prompt and click run as Administrator.

While in Command Prompt, type chkdsk /f /r and enter and let it run.  It will want to schedule itself to run at the next restart.   Answer yes and then reboot to run the program.  It will scan and try to fix any corruption or bad sectors on your hard drive and mostly remove that as a potential cause.  These files may be corrupted and this may fix that or it may remove them but it will resolve the corruption problem.  When done, go back to Command Prompt the same way as before.

Type regsrv32 wuaueng.dll and enter.

Type regsrv32 wuapi.dll and enter.

Type regsrv32 wucltux.dll and enter.

If it works, you should get no error messages - otherwise these files cannot be re-registered (or they are not present at all to do so).

Then close command prompt and reboot.  See if that resolves the problem (it re-registers the DLL files which is not the same as replacing them but may have the same impact on the problem).

If that doesn't work, I don't know where to find those files (I'm assuming only the DLL files are relevant - I don't understand the rest).  They may be on a genuine Vista Installation Disk.  If so, they can be extracted as follows:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/261616-extract-files-vista-installation-dvd.html.  One important consideration is that even if we find and extract them, I dont know where in the operating system they belong (which folder) - but maybe we can figure it out if we need to do this and we get this far.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

So I tried the above and still wasn't able to apply SP1 and running the Readiness tool still produced the same results.  I was able to locate the system recovery DVD's for the laptop and just did a complete reinstall.  Immediately applied the SP1 and SP2 and hopefully will not have anymore issues with this OS.

Unfortunately, This seems to be the only Tried & True fix to this Registry error. I have the "

C:\Windows\WinSyS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_none_d09154e044272b9a\MSVCR80.dll is either not designed to run on Wondows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."

Anybody, please give an answer that fixes the errors listed in this post or what I have listed.

Thanks for you reply, but this is really nothing to do with an update issue.  It's more a broken system  I am missing the files stated above and am looking for their original source so I may then extract them and place them in their correct location.
