Windows cannot access \\computername\D

When I try to access \computername\D from another computer I get the following error:

Windows cannot access \computername\D

You do not have permission to access \computername\D. Contact

Only one username shows in the "Group or user names" dialog of "Permissions for D": terrafrost (computername\terrafrost).  The "Permissions for terrafrost" section has "Full Control", "Change" and "Read" all checked off.

My question is...  why am I not being prompted for login information when trying to access \computername\D from my other computer?

You are correct: Under previous versions of Windows, shared folders had a small hand underneath their icons. This flag seems to have been dropped under Windows 7.

I feel that we're running round in circles without making any real progress, probably because I am not aware of something that is particular to your machine, even though folder sharing is a simple concept that is widely used without any problems. I can see these options for you:

a) See if another respondent picks up the thread, hopefully with some fresh ideas.

b) Ask a computer-savvy friend to assist you in person.

c) Back up your data, then reload Windows.

d) Take the machines to a service shop to get professional assistance.

e) Make a fee-based service call to Microsoft.

f) Live with the problem.

g) Let me have a look at your machine, using TeamViewer

(www.teamviewer.com, using this file: http://www.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewerQS.exe)

If you wish to consider option g), send a note to pegasusDOTfnlATgmailDOTcom.

Per the Security tab, "Authenticated Users" have Allow set for all Permissions save for "Special permissions" and "Full control".  SYSTEM and Administrators have Allow set for all Permissions and Users has Allow set only for "Read & execute", "List folder contents" and "Read".  Since "TerraFrost" is an Administrator and since Administrators have Full Access shouldn't TerraFrost be able to view everything?

Modus ponens tells us that if you have "All men are mortal" and "Socrates is a man" then you can assume "Socrates is mortal".  Similarly, if all admins have Full Access and TerraFrost is an admin then shouldn't TerraFrost have full access as well?

You right-click the problem folder, then click "Security" and take it from there.

    How do I do that?

Right now, all I'm doing is this: I right click on "New Volume (D:)" in "Computer", I click on the "Sharing" tab, I click on the "Advanced Sharing" button, I check off "Share this folder" and I gave the "TerraFrost" user all the permissions.

If all this does is (a) then how do I do (b)?

You must set both permissions on \ComputerName:

    a) The permissions for the folder Terrafrost (if this is the folder name behind the D share)

    b) The permissions for the share "D".
