Hi TheodGR,
a) Since when are you facing this issue? Do you recall making any changes to the computer before this happened?
b) What is the exact error message you receive?
I would suggest you to try the following steps:
Step 1: Make theVolume Shadow Copy Service is set to automatic and started. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click on Start-Run, type "services.msc", the click on OK.
2. When the Services window loads, navigate to the " Volume Shadow Copy ", the double click on it to open it,
3. Make sure the "Startup Type" says "Automatic" and started. If it doesn't, use the drop down menu to change it.
4. If it already says: "Automatic", then click on the "Recovery" tab at the top, and change the "First Failure" line to "Restart the Service", then click on "apply", then OK.
Check if the issue is resolved,
Step 2: Run CHKDSK (check disk) on the external hard drive to scan for any bad sectors, to do this, follow the steps below:
- Open Computer by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Computer.
- Right-click the external drive (The backup drive) that you want to check, and then click Properties.
- Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
To automatically repair problems with files and folders that the scan detects, select automatically fix file system errors. Otherwise, the disk check will simply report problems but not fix them.
To perform a thorough disk check, select Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. This scan attempts to find and repair physical errors on the hard disk itself, and it can take much longer to complete.
To check for both file errors and physical errors, select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
- Click Start.
Depending upon the size of your hard disk, this may take several minutes. For best results, don't use your computer for any other tasks while it's checking for errors.

**Note:**CHKDSK would try to recover bad sectors on the hard disk, during this process there are chances of DATA loss from that particular sector.
After the CHKDSK, check if the issue is resolved,
Thanks and Regards:
