This browser is no longer supported.
Upgrade to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of the latest features, security updates, and technical support.
Whenever I attempt to run the check for updates for Windows Defender I recieve the above mentioned error code. I have tried all the sites that Microsoft Support lists for this problem but to no avail.
Does anyone have the secret to over come this persistant error?

Take a look at this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
Info re that error code is in the above link.
Also, read this:
If you have AVG, McAfee, Norton, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc installed, they will either have a conflict with Windows Defender, or disable it.
Microsoft Security Essentials has its own built-in version of Defender and should automatically disables Vista's version of Windows Defender.
If it doesn't:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Turn-Windows-Defender-on-or-off
Turn Windows Defender on or off information at the above Microsoft link.
Hope the above explains common compatibility problems with Windows Defender and other Security Programs.
