Run Blocked Program-Registry Editor

Anonymous
2009-08-20T17:26:10+00:00

At every startup or switch user, we get a blocked program message. If I point to run blocked program, a tab comes out that reads "registry editor". If I click on "show or remove blocked startup programs", none of the programs shown are listed as blocked. Microsoft Registry Editor has a "permitted" permission.  This is driving us crazy. Any help is appreciated. We have Vista Home Premium.

Hi Freqy,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows Vista Forums

We will do our best to help you resolve the issue. But you have to inform us if the steps we provide did not resolve the issue, so that we can assist you better and provide you with more steps.

Since none of the programs which are listed are blocked, try removing the startup items that you don’t want to load at the system startup. To do these follow the following steps.

  1. Click Start, type regedit, right click on regedit.exe in the list and then click “Run as administrator”.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.

  1. Expand Computer -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run

Right click on Run, click Export, name the file as HKCURun and then click Save button. Click Run on the “Registry Editor”, in the right pane select and remove all the items except the “Default” item. If any item refers to the security software, then do not remove it.

  1. Expand the path: Computer -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows -> CurrentVersion -> Run

Right click on Run, click Export, name the file as HKLMRun and then click Save button.

Click Run on the “Registry Editor”, in the right pane select and remove all the items except the “Default” item. If any item refers to the security software, then do not remove it.

  1. Restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up a

As a workaround try removing the temp files and folders. To do this, follow these steps.

  1. Click Start, type %temp% and hit enter.
  2. Select and delete all the temporary files and folders except those files that give error messages.

Let me know if this worked.

All the best!

Thanks and Regards:

Diana did you read the question at all? The most annoying things about MS forums is the cut and paste answers that are then marked as correct by one of the MSFT's buddies.

None of the programs are listed as blocked. I have seen the same problem on countless Vista rigs and am also looking for a solution if anyone has one.

    Hi MommaMo ,

Before we begin, you have to know which programs and services are being blocked. You can see a list of blocked programs and services by following these steps:

    1. Click the Blocked startup programs icon that is in the notification area.
    2. Point to the Run blocked program menu list. The programs and services that have been blocked from starting are located here.

To know which method you should try to solve your problem, decide which of the following actions you want to take:

Method 1: Run the blocked program or the blocked service

****After Windows Vista starts, you can run any blocked programs or blocked services by following these steps:

    1. Click the Blocked startup programsicon that is in the notification area.
    2. Point to Run blocked program, and then click the program or the service in the list that you want to start.

Collapse this imageExpand this imageIf you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

Method 2: Disable the blocked program or the blocked service

****To disable a program or a service during the Windows Vista startup process, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Blocked startup programsicon that is in the notification area.
    2. Click Show or remove blocked startup programs. This starts Software Explorer in Windows Defender.
    3. Locate, and then click to select the startup program or the startup service that is in Software Explorer.
    4. Click Disable, and then click yes in the confirmation dialog box.

Method 3: Remove the blocked program or the blocked service from the startup processTo remove a program or a service from the startup process completely, try to use the Programs and Features item in Control Panel. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type appwiz.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    2.    Collapse this imageExpand this imageClick the program in the Programs and Featureslist, and then click Uninstall/Change.

If you cannot remove the program by using the Programs and Featuresitem in Control Panel, you can remove the program from the startup process by using Software Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click the Blocked startup programsicon that is in the notification area.
    2. Click Show or remove blocked startup programs. This starts Software Explorer in Windows Defender.
    3. Locate, and then click to select the startup program or the startup service that is in Software Explorer.
    4. Click Remove, and then click Yes in the confirmation dialog box.
