every time i try to start the troubleshooter, it stops 3 clicks in.  in other words, i can click on the troubleshooter, it will give me a list of broad areas to choose from, i can click on that, it gives me specific packages to choose from, i can click on that, then it prompts me to start the specific troubleshooter, and when i click "next" it stops and says, "an error occurred while troubleshooting: a problem is preventing the troubleshooter from starting." when i click on details, it gives me:

package id: (various - i've tried almost all of them)

path: unknown

error code: 0x80070005

source: engine

user: home-pc\home

context: elevated

this is a new computer: hp pavilion dv4, amd turion II dual core *** Email address is removed for privacy ***, 4GB RAM, x-64 Win 7 home premium, version 6.1.7600 build 7600

the troubleshooting has never worked (2 mos.old)

any help would be appreciated!

thanks,

marty mussman

Hi Marty,

Make sure that you have logged in as an Administrator. You may also try running the troubleshooter with Admin privileges. To do that, right click on the Troubleshooter you would like to launch and then select “Run as an Administrator.”

How do I run an application once with a full administrator access token?

Regards,

Chethan Kumar.

    I am running Win7 64 SP1 on a fast Intel quad-core with 32 Gb RAM.

This advice WAS helpful, and allowed me to run the troubleshooter.

However, I have a STUBBORN Windows Update problem that the troubleshooter could not resolve, and I am currently approaching 1 month without Windows or other Microsoft applications updates.

    • Does anyone publish a "hit list" of critical updates I can download from Microsoft Update Catalog site (https://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/DownloadInformation.aspx) in order to close security gaps until this is resolved?  If so, please advise.
    • There are about 5 or 6 MS online, downloadable patches for this problem (one of them over 500 Mb in size; claims to uninstall and reinstall the WU service completely).  None of these "external solutions" have worked either, and I wonder now whether there is a way to wipe all applicable directories and Registry values, then re-install WU from the command prompt, using a Windows Recovery DVD.

If you know of a way to complete either or both of the foregoing tasks, I would of course appreciate the help/guidance.
