Network drive appears to cause errors: system image 0x81000101 and shutdown 0x0000009f

Background:

I have recently purchased 2 new laptops: HP Pavilion model dv6-2151cl. These are running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.  I’m a newbie with Win 7.  I also have a network drive on my home network: Western Digital 1 Tb My Book World Edition model WD1000H1NC-00. I installed various software, and then I noticed a set of issues appeared on both laptops.

3 apparently related failure modes:

·        Attempting to generate a Windows 7 restore point, system image, or backup saved to DVD-R causes the following error: “The creation of a shadow copy has timed out.  Try the operation again. 0x81000101.”

·        Closing the laptop’s lid and reopening it causes the laptop to go into sleep/hibernate mode, and using the mouse, keyboard, or power button cannot wake it. I have to hold down the power button to shut off the laptop, reboot, and then receive the “Windows did not shut down normally… safe mode vs start normally” screen.

·        Shutting down the computer causes it to display the “shutting down” message for 5-10 minutes. This is followed by a BSOD that displays for 1-2 seconds. The BSOD contains a Driver Power State Failure message with error 0x0000009f. After the BSOD, the laptop reboots and displays the “Windows did not shut down normally… safe mode vs start normally” screen. Note that this sequence occurs about 80% of the time, but occasionally the laptop is able to shut down normally.

Preliminary root cause:

·        I am fairly certain that all 3 of these failure modes occur when my network hard drive is present on my home network, and all 3 of these issues go away when the network drive is removed and the laptops are rebooted.  See below for details.

My goal:

·        I am trying to find the true root cause of this issue and fix it so that I may then use my network drive without generating the 3 failure modes described above on my laptops.

After performing some research, here are the actions I have taken so far:

·        Shut down antivirus (as much as possible with NIS 2010)

·        Under power management, I set sleep / hibernate to “never”

·        Checked Control Panel / Administrative / Services to make sure Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider and Volume Shadow Copy services were both started and set to automatic. I did the same for each of their dependent services.  I rebooted.

·        In Control Panel / System Properties / System Protection, I manually deleted all restore points. I also turned off protection for all drive partitions, rebooted, and then I turned protection on for only C drive (backup partition not selected).

·        Ran Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Disk Cleanup on all drive partitions in series. I rebooted.

·        Second time: In Control Panel / System Properties / System Protection, I manually deleted all restore points. I also turned off protection for all drive partitions, rebooted, and then I turned protection on for only C drive (backup partition not selected).

·        The above actions did not impact the 3 failure modes.

·        I turned the network drive off and rebooted the laptops. All 3 failure modes went away on both laptops.  I turned the network drive back on and rebooted the laptops. All 3 failure modes reappeared on both laptops.  I repeated this cycle a second time and had the exact same results.

·        I used WD’s “WD Discovery” software to log into the network drive’s web admin screen, I tried to update the drive’s firmware, and I received a message that the network drive already had the latest firmware (version 01.01.18).

·        I used Windows Device Manager to review the 4 drivers used by Windows 7 for the network drive. I checked for new driver versions using Device Manager’s Update Driver button / search automatically for updated driver software option, and it told me I already had the latest driver versions:

·        hpdskflt.sys (version 4.1.1.1)

·        partmgr.sys (version 6.1.7600.16385)

·        umpass.sys (version 6.1.7600.16385)

·        wdmbw.1NC.dll (version 6.0.6000.16386)

Any help in resolving this issue will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Diana D.  I missed something the first time around: disabling all the on/off options in the NIS 2010 main menu and then rebooting does permit the system image to take place without the shadow copy time out 0x81000101 error even when my network drive is online.  So while my 3 failure modes (see start of thread) are still related to the network HD being on the network, the root cause for the shadow copy time out appears to be different than the cause of the other two issues.

I made sure that the network hard drive device was set to "full trust" in NIS 2010.  Then, I starting turning the on/off options in NIS 2010 back to the "on" status one at a time and testing the ability to make a system image.  I found out that any of the following NIS 2010 elements being turned on will cause the shadow copy time out error when the network HD is online: antivirus, insight protection, SONAR protection, and/or download intelligence.  Note the firewall is not the issue.

Do you know of a method to keep the NIS 2010 antivirus protection, etc. active and yet still permit system images with the network HD being online?

    Thank you,

    PBJG

    Hi,

the crash is caused by this driver:

        Loaded symbol image file: hpdskflt.sys

        Image path: \SystemRoot\system32\DRIVERS\hpdskflt.sys

        Image name: hpdskflt.sys

        Timestamp:        Fri Jul 16 17:02:38 2010 (4C40748E)

    So update it please.

    Hi,

Temporarily disable the security software/Firewall and check if the issue persists. If the issue does not occur then you may want to change the settings so that it allows the device.

Note: Ensure to enable the security software so that the computer is protected.

    Thank you, Andre.

Here's a Skydrive link to the dmp file that was created after trying to shut down my laptop after the WD network drive was reconnected.  The failure mode is that windows displays "Shutting down..." for 5-10 minutes before a BSOD for 0x0000009f (driver power state failure) error is displayed for several seconds.

    http://cid-9f6157f3f649f771.office.live.com/self.aspx/Minidump/082410-22994-01%20%5E5after%20Shutting%20down%20BSOD%5E6.dmp

I also received an error when attempting a system image with the hard drive connected to the network (note I selected backup to DVD-R).  The partially complete status bar "Windows is saving the backup....Preparing to create backup" is displayed for perhaps 5 minutes, then the following error messages are displayed together:  1) Windows backup timed out before the shared protection point was created 0x80780021, and 2) The creation of a shadow copy has timed out 0x81000101.  These error messages are displayed in a normal window, not a BSOD.  No new dmp file was created in c:\Windows\Minidump after this error event.

Please zip and upload the dmp files from the folder C:\Windows\Minidump to your Skydrive [1] (copy the dmp files first to your desktop, if you can't upload them) and post a link here, so that I can look at the dumps.
