I recently bought a new computer with Windows 7 Home edition.  Recently when the computer is not running any other software but windows it will shut down.  When turning on the computer again I get a message that says that Windows was shut down improperly.  I always get a message at the beginning of starting up as to which mode I want to boot up "normal, safe, etc".  Has anyone had this problem?

Hi Calvin12,

Thank you for visiting Microsoft Answers.

Are you getting any error messages?

Check in event viewer for any particular error.

  1. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel , clicking System and Security , clicking Administrative Tools , and then

double-clicking Event Viewer . ‌ If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  1. Click an event log in the left pane.
  2. Double-click an event to view the details of the event.

Refer this link for information on event viewer:

Boot your system into safemode and check if the system works fine. If it works, then do a Clean Boot to see if this issue is related to interference

 from other services / programs:

1.Click Start , type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,

type the password, or click Continue .)

2.On the General tab, click Selective Startup .

3.Under Selective Startup , click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

4.Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All .

5.Click OK .

6.When you are prompted, click Restart .

7.Log back into your Account.

If the problem does not return while your computer is in a clean boot mode, a background program is likely causing interference.

You may determine which background program is causing the problem through following the steps (Begin at enable half of the Services items ) in the

below linked article:

How to perform a clean boot procedure to determine whether background programs are interfering with a game or a program that you currently use

To restore your Normal startup:

1.Click Start , type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. (If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation,

type the password, or click Continue .)

2.On the General tab, click Normal Startup .

3.When you are prompted, click Restart .
