The problem with saying it is Svchost is that is just an executable wrapper that is used to blanket a Windows service so it can be called as an executable - and if you use a more robust tool like Process Explorer then you'll see that that one file (and usually there are like 2-4 instances of it running) can have a whole bevy of services that it is actually loading.
Windows 7 100% CPU problem = update cause?
My laptop is running on 2GB rams and processor is intel core 2 duo T8100.
Like many others, I am having 100% CPU problems. My last update was at 4th June and before that last update, my computer was running well. After that update and a restart, the 100% CPU problem occurred. So, can the microsoft staffs review the update close to that date and investigate to see if any of the updates is the one that is causing the problem? (Updates published before that date.) (Probably, an update that did some changes to the drivers or processor?)
Methods that I tried but did not work:
Reinstalling (problem came back even if I did not update it and no softwares installed. <--- just the default programs.)

Stopping some CPU-comsuming services.
The puzzling part about this is that after I stopping some of the processes, the CPU stays around 30-40% then it would slowly and unknowningly rising back to 100%

2010-06-10T04:16:50+00:00 I did! I did!
The problem is that the cpu temporarily drops to around 12% then slowly climbs back to 100%. I tried going to the services and disable it but it would not work. It does not solve the core of the problem though. Plus, it is only a fresh installation without any programs installed. It may have something to do with drivers or some changes to the laptop hardware. It is the update I think.

2010-06-10T04:06:13+00:00 Uninstall the last update? U mean using the system restore tools? I did try out the system restore tools but it failed with an error something like " no shadow copy or something".
I wanted to check out about this error and it is like a side-effect of that 100% CPU usage issue. I did try out system restore before reinstallation. The Windows update seems to overwrite all my created restore points after each update and I am only left with the one for 4th june.

Your new computer without the updates would probably work fast. Try updating it. If it gets fixed, I would be posting the solution here. lol

2010-06-09T15:24:37+00:00 That is weird. That actual happened to me, while i was using the windows 7 beta. But now that I got a laptop with windows 7 home premium on it, I have had very little problems with the CPU. My only problem was Toshiba put tons of stupid programs to start on first use!! I was not very happy. But back to your problem, did it get fixed. Because you said the problem started June 4, and its 9th. Also do you have all the latest updates even the optional ones? Also I bought my computer on June 4, so that is weird that i have no problems. but after you check you have all the latest updates, and if it still does not work. you can just uninstall that last update. if you don't know how i will tell you later, after you reply to this post.
