Why can't I add members to a Azure AD group?

According to all docs I should be able to add new members if my account is listed in the owners of a group. I have the problem that the "Add members" function is shown but does nothing when clicked in Azure AD and Outlook Online. I have tested using my admin account and using this the functionality works, so this is not a device or browser issue.

Please help me understand what policies or settings control if the "Add members" function is clickable or not?

What kind of group is that? Some groups are not authored in Azure AD, and you have to use the Exchange Online tools instead.

    Hi all,

I had this same issue. I had created two Groups in Azure AD, was the owner of those groups, but could not add Members (the +Add button was not active, as shown by the OP). The time between creating the group in the portal and trying to add the members was within a few seconds.

Resolution: In short, it was some sort of authentication issue with my session. I signed out of Azure portal. I closed and reopened my browser. I signed in again. Went back to the same Groups I was having issue with and now I can +Add members to the group.

Since the OP did not answer regarding what sort of group he was dealing with, I will state that my groups were Source: Cloud and Type: Security. So, maybe my resolution is not applicable to the OP's problem.

Interesting side note... At the time I was experiencing the problem, I had three Groups. One was created on a Monday, and the other two created the following day - on Tuesday. I could still Add members to the group created on Monday, but not add members to the Groups created on Tuesday. Additionally, on all these groups I could Add Owners to the groups. Once I logged out and in again, all functioned as expected.

    Best regards,
    James

    Hi Tom,

I wasn't able to replicate the issue. User that didn't have access rights got an error message. But the Add members menu was opening on the right.

Can you try switching to Legacy Group experience (button is inside of a blue bar on your screenshot) and try again?

I know you tested different user so it's probably not the browser, but it might be something cached for a user where it doesn't show. I would still try different browser or clearing the cache.

Also, what type of group this is ?

    Let us know :)

    Vukasin
