Hi Grahams Mail problems,
Welcome to Microsoft answers!
a) How exactly did you backup the old mails?
I would suggest you to try the following steps:
This issue may occur due to Anti-virus program that tries to scan the E-mail , Antivirus software invades the windows mail program to try and intercept (incoming and, in some cases, outgoing) messages that might contain virus. The problem with this approach is that the antivirus software can trigger the destruction of an entire message folder or the entire message store, when it attempts to remove a message containing a potential virus.
**Step 1:**Firstly, check if windows mail is set as default program, if not, try to set windows mail as default, see the steps below:
- Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Default Programs.
- Click set your default programs.
- Under Programs, click the e‑mail program you'd like to use, and then click Set this program as default.
- Click OK.

Now check if the issue is resolved, if the issue persists try the following steps:
Step 2: Turn off email scanning in your antivirus software and then test
For more information about how to do this, see the product documentation, or contact the software provider.
Important: - It is not recommended to disable Email scanning; in this step we are just trying to test if Anti-virus software is causing the problem. Enable the anti-virus software once the test is done.
If the issue still persists,
Step 3: Follow the steps to repair Windows mail Database
- Open an elevated command prompt(Click on start and in the start search bar type cmd, right click on the command prompt icon in the programs area and then click on run as administrator)
- These are three useful commands.
- Copy and paste the text under the command description. And, do this with Windows Mail closed.
Repair-
esentutl /p "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\windowsmail.msmessagestore"
Defragmentation-
esentutl /d "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\windowsmail.msmessagestore"
Integrity-
esentutl /g "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\windowsmail.msmessagestore"
Hope this information is helpful.
