Error code c0000006

I have a Win Vista SP2 32-bit machine that will no longer boot. Whether normal or safe mode it results in a blue screen with error code c0000006 because of I/O error status of 0x%08lx.

A chkdisk /r was ran from a command prompt booted from CD.  Some errors were found and corrected.  Still won't boot.

Using WinRE startup check from a VistaSP2 DVD it finds no problems except for system file mismatch but won't correct it, displaying error code 0x45d.

Selecting a restore point recovery results in a message that there are no restore points, even though the machine was set to save them per default settings.

Attempting to run sfc from the admin command prompt via WinRE with a sfc /scannow or sfc /verifyonly results in an error

"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Attempting to do the same in offline mode with sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows results in error "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

There is no \windows\winsxs\pending.xml file.

I apparently can't perform an in place upgrade reinstallation (or upgrade to Win7) if the existing installation won't boot.

Any thoughts as to what to try next?

Well, it appears it's now moot.  The HD just died.  It must have been on the way out.  Looks like a new HD and clean install of Win7 is in order...
