I am having difficulty creating a bootlog file for Windows XP Media Center edition. If I press F8 during startup and get the advanced startup screen and then highlight Enable Boot Logging  it shows up in blue at the bottom of the screen as it should but once I press "enter" and Windows starts I am unable to find the bootlog file in %SystemRoot%.

I must be doing something wrong so I am asking for help from the community.

The reason for trying to create a boot log is because each time Windows starts it takes longer and longer and longer before I have a usable destop without the hourglass. I have not installed any new apps. or made any know changes for a long time.

Hi,

You can also enable boot log by adding the /BOOTLOG switch to the operating system entry in the boot.ini file as follows:

a. This file is in the C:\ (root) and is visible only when “Hide protect operating system files (Recommended)” option is unchecked from “Tools – Folder Options” when in the C:\ drive.

b. Also, the file is set as Read-Only so uncheck the “read-only” option from right-click and Properties.

c. Open this file in notepad and then in the end type /BOOTLOG and save the file.

Hope this helps.

maybe you need to tune up your system.  running a disk defrag and check disk once a month or so will help keep the disk and file system tuned up.

also, you can boot up in safe mode and see if performance is improved. if so, then you may need to execute a "clean boot".  you can try safe boot and then also try safe boot w/networking to test the internet connectivity.
