    Hello,

SQL Server licenses are bound to the version. If you want to upgrade to a new version, then you have to purchase new licenses.

You can perform an in-place migration, then everything stays the same, only SQL Server is a new version.

    Hi @mohdashraf azam ,

    > Do i need to purchase any license for this upgrade

Yes, you need to buy SQL server 2016 Enterprise license key or SQL server 2017 Enterprise license key when you upgrade SQL 2012 enterprise to SQL 2017\2016 enterprise.

    > and can i use the same server for upgrade to i have to prepare new server for this upgrade.

Yes, you can use the same server windows 2012 R2. Do a SQL server in-place upgrade. Please refer to the blog How to Upgrade SQL Server 2012 / 2014 to SQL Server 2016 to get detail steps.

    Bes regards,
    Cathy
