I have an application that installs and works on about 90% of computers but 10% I get an APPCRASH error.  This is the type of error report I get.

I have tried a lot of things to no avail. Please help.

    Hi,

    ·         Which application are you referring to?

I would suggest you to perform clean boot and try installing the application.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

    Hope this information helps.

I have a similar problem with a 32-bit Windows application I am developing in C++ using MSVC 2008 Express.  The app runs RELIABLY when I'm running it through the debugger, but I RANDOMLY get the APPCRASH with exception code c0000005 when running the app in Release mode under Windows 7 (64-bit) after opening and then connecting to a USB serial port dongle.  The crash comes when I start actively receiving data from the prototype hardware device I'm supporting.

Obviously, my code could have an uninitialized (pointer) variable (in release mode) or whatever, but there is little difference in the code except which libraries (DEBUG or NDEBUG versions) that are linked in.  After searching on the Internet, I have noted that this seems to be a very common problem (games, Skype, .... and even Microsoft apps like Explorer and Outlook).  There have been many varied suggested solutions, such as fixing Registry problems.  I have used a Registry cleaner to no avail (other than correcting a lot of unrelated Registry entries).  What puzzles me is the behavioral difference between the debug and release modes of operation.  In debug mode an uninitialized pointer variable, for example, should still cause a trapped problem.

I cannot use a safe mode to run the USB/serial port.
