i was able to solve the problem on my Microsoft Vista computer but uninstalling Constant Guard that I had downloaded and installed along with Comcast's free Norton. I got this tip on another thread and after followinging their advice I was free to use my number/symbol row of keys again!! I was able to close my email and character/symbol copy and past sheet in Word.
keyboard numbers row below function keys not working after windows upgrade
Upgraded from Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit to Window Ult 64 bit.Keyboard row below func keys not working right if online using Windows Explorer, Firefox n Safari - Numbers don't work -- some type nothing;others type letter like k;with shift key, signs and symbols type nothing. I can get t numbers by using Num Lock and my numeric keypad. Tried 3 keyboards. One was a brand new Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 USB keyboard and it had the same problems. My wireless USB transmitter keyboard had the problem too. All have same problem. Keys are ok using Word, Wordpad, etc.Used repeat key speed test online and the keys were all ok then.
This began happening immediately after I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate. I am using an HP Pavilion a6667c desktop with 8 gigs of RAM and the most recent updates available for windows ultimate. The problem has occurred both before and after upgrading to service pack 1. I have noticed other people on the web posting about this problem too. I had no error messages when using Vista Home Premium 64 bit version and had installed all the most recent updates to it as well.
The only workaround I have found for this problem is to build myself a little table of the characters and symbols I cannot make and pasting them in when I am online using one of the three browsers I use most often. I have looked at my keyboard settings and have changed back and forth between US English and British English with no results.
I will post my keyboard problem on HP forums as well. Thanks for any help anyone can give me or leads. Somehow, I think this is a simple problem to solve, but I've searched and searched and browsed and browsed for several days finding many people that have this type of keyboard problem, but no solution yet.

2011-10-02T01:36:51+00:00 I got a hold of Microsoft Tech Support (after arguing with the Customer Service rep who flat out refused to transfer me to Tech Support because SHE thought it was my keyboard magically breaking coincidentally right after I installed Windows 7...thanks idiot), and that is exactly what they told me to do. I'm a little miffed that I had to uninstall Windows Mail (wtf?), iTunes (WTF?!), AND update the graphics driver BEFORE Windows 7 would even install. So far I'm underwhelmed by Windows 7 for all the hassle I had to go through and the money I spent.
But now that I'm done venting, thanks very much for your response. I'd have been pretty peeved though, if I did not get this resolved on a support call, but had to depend on another forum goer for tech support.

Seriously? you have to re-install the entire operating system to fix the numbers on a keyboard? CMON

2011-09-28T23:25:07+00:00 I'm having this same problem. However, mine happened after upgrading from Windows XP to Windows vista. I really don't want to do a full reformat, since that would require a lot of re set up. Any other suggestions?
