Display problem with Easy Connect

Anonymous
2010-12-27T13:01:47+00:00

I have a new desktop PC running Windows 7.  I just bought my mother an HP laptop runnint windows 7 with a widescreen.

Remote assistance and easy connect work ... just, but I have a display problem.  The remote (widecreen 1366 x 768) PC appears an a stripy monochrome diagonally distorted way on my 1280 x 1024 screen.

The display looks like the horizontal hold has failed on an old style 60s TV!

Any ideas?  I can't find any settings and "actual size" and "fit to screen" have no effect.  Changing the window size my end helps a bit by dragging it to the minimum size, but the diagonal distortion still remains.

This seems a shame as it doesn't work as well as the old XP to XP remote assistance did.  (NB both these PCs are running Windows 7.)

Hi,

Yes you are correct about remote assistance and remote desktop connection. Your mother will not be able to see the screen in case of remote desktop connection. I seem to have strayed away from the issue. I apologize for my mistake.

You may check if the below provided steps assist you -

Step 1: Troubleshoot connection problems on your computer

a.    Open Remote Assistance by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type  Remote Assistance, and then, in the list of results, click  Windows Remote Assistance.

b.    Click Invite someone you trust to help you.

c.    If you've never used Easy Connect, click Use Easy Connect.

d.    If the connection attempt fails, click Troubleshoot, and then follow the instructions.

Step 2:

If the troubleshooter doesn't help with any problems on your computer, then there might be a problem on the computer you're trying to connect to. Ask the person that you're requesting help from to run the troubleshooter.

If you're still having problems connecting, try the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool on theMicrosoft website to check whether your router supports new connectivity technologies. For Remote Assistance to work, the computer must pass the Network Address Translator Type test.

    Meghmala,

I am having the exact same problem as Simon.  Both my computers are running windows 7 and I am trying to use remote assistance through "Easy Connect".  When I connect from my dell laptop and view my acer netbook the connection works great.  But when I try to go the other way, and view my dell laptop from my acer netbook the image displayed on the netbook is diagonal, distorted, and almost looks like a mirror image is being displayed.  Both of the resolution are identical. Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Matt

    Maghmala,

Thanks very much for the reply.

Step 1 this just doesn't work, I've tried all the options supported by my monitor:

    1280 x 1024 (normal)

and the widescreen aspect ratio settings

    1280 x 960

    1280 x 800

    1280 x 768

    1280 x 720

I still get the following problems:

    1. a very stipey black and white display (like staring at an old black and white TV from too close)
    2. a "lozenged" display (everything is slanted to the right)

I'm just puzzled why Remote Assistance can't cope when I can see her screen perfectly with Skype!  (But Skype doesn't allow me to take control.)

Getting my mother to change the resolution of her new laptop just isn't practical as I am trying to support her when she gets into a muddle.

Step 2 seems to have hope but this appears to be Remote Desktop Connection not Remote Assistance .  Remote Desktop Asssistance would I understand give me access to her PC and the ability to take control, but she wouldn't be able to see the screen if I needed to show her something.

Anyhow I had a go and couldn't work out how to set up the name of the Compter.  The example given is "computer.fabrikam.com".  I am trying to gain access to my aged mother's HP laptop which is connected to the internet via a standard broadband home hub.

    Regards,

    Simon.

    Hi ZZZZeppphyrr,

Step 1: The monitors should have the same resolution for the remote connection to get displayed properly. I would suggest you to make the resolution same for both computers.

To check and adjust the screen resolution for your monitors you may refer to the below provided link -

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-your-screen-resolution

You can even try changing the display settings of the wide screen computer as that of your computer and check if this helps.

Step 2: If the issue persists and you still get a distorted display then I would suggest you to check the remote desktop connection display settings - a. Open Remote Desktop Connection by clicking the Start button. In the search box, type Remote Desktop Connection, and then, in the list of results, click Remote Desktop Connection.

    b. In Computer, type the name of the computer you want to connect to.

    c. Before connecting, click Options, and click the Display tab.

    d. Change the size of remote desktop in display configuration settings. Also in colors option you may choose the color depth of the remote session like Highest Quality

(32-bit) or any other and check if the display gets proper.

    e. Go to the "Experience" tab

    f. Choose the "High-speed broadband" or "LAN" setting from the "Connection speed" menu.

    g. Check the boxes next to "Font smoothing," "Menu and window animation" and "Visual styles."

    h. Press the "Connect" button to initiate a new Remote Desktop session with the updated settings.

    Hope this helps.
