Original Title: automatic updates fail to download and application installation failure due to system registry

Running XP PROFESSIONAL - two issues...

  • Failed automatic downloads of  Window Updates.

      Error Code: 0x57A on

  1. Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB2541025)
  2. Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB2539581)

Error Code: 0x80070652.

  1. Security Update for Microsoft Office 2003 (KB2509503)
  2. Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB2541025)

So I tried to research a solution and came upon a blog that said I should disable my antivirus and try again.  Didn't work.  The blog then suggested that i uninstall MS Office and reinstall. So i did.  Uninstalled MS Professional and then tried to re-install....

  • received error mesage 1402 -

Setup cannot upen the registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SoftWare\Microsoft\CurrentVersion\Run\OptionalComponents\MSFS

Can anybody tell me if these two things are related and/or how to fix it.  I was stupid and didn't back up.

Hi jbb59,

  • Can you install other updates without any issues?
  • Do you receive this error mcode while trying to install Office updates only?

Error 80070652 means that a previous installation has not been completed successfully. Restarting computer generally fixes this issue.

Try the methods listed in the articles given below to fix this issue:
