"Adjust for the best performance of: <Programs> is selected on the Performance Options page .

Virtual Memory is 0MB.  Selecting <CHANGE> brings up the manual link for setting Virtual Memory.  It accepts a number and requests reboot.  Virtual Memory is back to zero after reboot.

    Hi,

Follow the steps mentioned below to increase the page file size.

    Method 1:

    a.       Click on Start menu and click on control Panel.

    b.      Select System in control panel.

    c.       In the left pane, click Advanced system settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    d.      On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.

    e.      Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.

    f.        Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.

    g.       Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.

    h.      Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK.

**Note:**Increases in size usually don't require a restart for the changes to take effect, but if you decrease the size, you'll need to restart your computer. We recommend that you don't disable or delete the paging file.

Now reboot the system and check whether the issue is resolved.

If you are not able to increase the page file size by using method 1 check method 2.

    Method 2:

    a.       Click on Start menu and type in cmd in the start search box.

    b.      Right click on cmd and click ‘run as administrator’.

    c.       Once the cmd prompt starts type in the following command.

    sc config afs start= disabled

Note: The syntax of the command is very particular - there is no space before the =, but there is one after it

Now restart the system and check.

As Pegasus has mentioned, it might be that there is a limited free space on the disk. I would suggest you to optimize windows 7 for better performance and delete unwanted files from the system and check whether the issue is resolved. I would suggest you to follow the steps mentioned in the article given below.

You might have insuffient free space on your System partition. 20% of capacity is a good figure.

    Pegasus,

I just installed Windows7 about a month ago and replaced a 80GB IDE drive with a 1TB SATA drive.  I split it into two partitions of approximately 50% each so I have around 350 GB remaining on Drive C.  I also replaced an external 250GB drive with a 2TB drive because I do photography and was running out of space on the original external hard drive.

So to answer your suggestion, yes there is plenty of capacity on the system drive partition and the  Virtual Memory is now set to 4000MB minimum.  Cure for the problem??  The next thread has the cure.

Thank you for replying to my problem.

Thank you, Thahaseena M.  Hooray!!!  Finally back to normal.  The key line in your post was in Method 2.  The sc config afs start= disabled line finally allowed me to change the virtual memory and the program held it.  I have 4GB of RAM so I set the VM at 4 GB minimal.  All you guys are great providing a service to your fellow computer techs that like to pull hair out by the roots.

I went to the Optimize-Windows-7-for-better-performance site.  No problems were discovered.

    Again, Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback. The solution posted by Thahaseena appears to have been floating about for some time. However, I was unable to find out what the AFS service actually is. It does not exist on my machine. When you run the command services.msc, what are the details against the AFS entry?
