How to connect to Managed instance via PowerBI

Attempted to connect to the managed instance from PowerBI.com however received "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while trying to establish a connection to the SQL server..."
Do I actually need a Power BI Gateway to connect to the public endpoint since its really cloud to cloud?
I have however Power BI Gateway on premises and allowed the public IP address on that network to connect to the NSG related to the instance but still no luck.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
