Problem with Windows Update System 7 Ultimate with kb2669970

I have been trying to do Windows Update for two days.  It appers that the problem is with an update for "Security Update for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Service Pack 1 KB2669970.  The symptom I have is that the normal update process begins telling me that the Updates are being installed with the typical message that you should not turn off or unplug the computer.  The "dots" following the message continue to show the usual activity.  However, nothing appears to happen.  I've left it run for over 12 hours and still nothing happens.  I've run Microsoft Fixit 50123.  A message came up something like

"User 'SYSTEM' has previously initiated an install for product 'Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Shell (integrated mode) - ENU'.  That user will need to run that install again before they can use that product.  Your current install will now continue."

The scenario then continues to back out some things and finally says that things have been corrected.  BUT, things don't work still.

I then used System Restore to go back to a version that was about two weeks earlier.

After this restore, things have not been any different other than some odd things such as the Update Summary of Installed Updates showed activity AFTER the restore date, the time of the computer was now wrong by one hour since we restored to a date prior to daylight savings time and a few other things.  For example, an update to iTunes had occurred after the resore date and obviously iTunes asked to install the latest update.  This install would not work.  An error occurred.

When Windows Update went to run, there were 10 updates to be installed, the first 8 went fine but when it got to the 9th one which is the Kb2669970 update it hung.  I left it for 8 hours prior to forcing a shut down by holding the power off button until the power went off.

What should I try next?

It happened again with another update.  This update was for kb2251487.  I powered off the machine after three hours of waiting for the update to finish the "wait and don't turn off screen".  When I started up the machine again, went to fixit, "Fixit says it corrected the problems".  I then did the install from the update panel as opposed to the normal shut down.  The install happened almost immediately.  I'm confident that when the next update comes, I'll be in the same predicament.

Well - I've tried all the steps without sucess.  On the last method (method 4), the download installer starts fine, gets to about 85% installed and then rolls itself back.  I saved the message file as a pdf file so that I can send it it.  The messages I saw are similar to what I tried to put in the original message.  Basically, I do not know what to do.  Sorry for being so ignorant.

I'm waiting for the next update to find out where I am.  I've tried the first Method and I won't know if it really fixed the problem or not.  Sorry I can't give you a better answer yet.  Thank you for caring.

I will try these steps and then report on my success or otherwise.  Thank you for giving me some hope.  The only update that I can remember prior to this problem was the installation of a program called Snagit.  When I did a System Restore, I made sure it was back to prior to this install.

One other item which may be significant but I'm not sure.  Approximately a month or two ago, I could not get Outlook 2010 to start.  This happened just suddenly.  I got a message that said "Cannot start Business Contact Manager because the SQL Server Service (the Business Contact Manager database service) is not running.  Start the service, and then restart Outlook.  For mor information, click Help."

I tried to follow the directions but I could not get things working properly. In the directions were references to SQL Server 2008.  My system had Server 2005.  My original computer purchase came with Office 2007.  Because of the date of purchase, Microsoft provided an ugrade CD to Office 2010 Professional which I installed at that time.  I ended up removing the Business Contact Manager feature and Outlook ran fine after that.  I only mention this because of the odd thing that happened at that time.
