Problems when Installing Windows 95

Hey

I'm installing Windows 95. Before the setup window, it goes to MS-DOS. Here are the commands I used as suggested by others:

A:>fdisk

I then restart.

A:>format c:

Pressed enter for volume label.

A:>C:

C:>md Win95

C:>copy A:\Win95 C:\Win95

It then says it couldn't find that directory in A:.

So then I did this:

C:>dir A:

Then it showed me a list of files in A:

command.com

attrib.exe

debug.com

label.exe

autoexec.bat

mem.exe

format.com

edit.com

chkdsk.exe

cd1.sys

cd2.sys

move.exe

sys.com

regedit.exe

uninstal.exe

xcopy.exe

cd3.sys

find.exe

himem.sys

scandisk.exe

config.sys

deltree.exe

cd4.sys

fdisk.exe

scandisk.ini

mscdex.exe

xcopy32.exe

extract.exe

28 files(s) 0 dir(s)

How do I install windows?

EDIT: Guys, I fixed it. Just try to ignore this thread.

Ok here is what you want to do. I tested all these steps myself, and verified it works :D

1st. Download a bootable win95 iso from here

    http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/iso.html

    1. Next download a trial version of Ultra ISO from here

    http://www.ezbsystems.com/ultraiso/history.htm

    1. Now open the win95 iso you downloaded with Ultra ISO, and copy of the contents of the windows 95 cd into the ISO and save it.
    2. Now grab a copy of VMware Player from here.

    http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

    1. Now create a new vm, make sure to point the cd to the modified image
    2. Now use fdisk to make your c drive partition
    3. Now send a ctrl-alt-del, and real fast, click in the window, and hit f2 real fast.
    4. Now format the c: drive.
    5. Now go back to your c: drive and create a win95 folder (c:\win95)
    6. Now go to your win95 cd (Probably R:)
    7. Now copy everything to the folder on the C drive you created (copy *.* c:\win95)
    8. Now go back to your c drive, then change to the win95 folder (c:, cd\win95)
    9. Type Setup.exe
    10. After the first reboot, hit f2 again, and change the boot order so that the Hard Drive is the 1st thing on the boot order, save the changes, and exit the bios.
    11. Finish the install, and you should be all set.

    There isn't a setup DIR in A:

There wouldn't be. Setup.exe would be on the CD.

Boot up with the floppy, insert the CD and then change directories to the CD drive.

Windows 95 was released in the days before bootable CDs and BIOS's capable of booting from anything other than floppy disks and Hard drives...

Why on EARTH do you want to install Windows 95 in the first place? If this is a relatively modern machine then it won't run anyway......

Yes I do have a CD. Like I told you there is no directories in A: as I would have to enter md Win95. Another time I tried copying all the files from A: to C:. It copied everything but still there is no setup.exe in the file list.

I saw windows 95, and I had to check this out :D  It sounds like your trying to copy files from a windows 95 start up floppy. I think Windows 95 came on 11 floppy disk (your taking me back), so if you only have one, then it's probably not going to work. Do you have a cd for it? as for the command to copy something you would want copy a:\.* c:\win95, or copy a:\win95\.* c:\win95. If you have a cd of it, then you would want to change to the cd drive, usually D: (like  Andre was talking about) and just type setup.exe and it will start the install. If the disk you have is an upgrade, you will need (and i can't believe im saying this), a copy of your windows 3 floppy disks to perform the upgrade. Hope that helps :D

I believe you should change to the location of the CD drive (if you are install Windows 95 from a CD) and type:

    d:\setup\win95

    If its a floppy, type:

    a:\setup\win95
