In the prior versions of Movie Maker, the audio would be retained.

In WMM 2.x (either 2.1 from XP or 2.6 from Vista), the sound will change pitch.  In other words, if you slow it down you'll get lower pitch audio.  If you speed it up you will get "chipmunk" audio.  So if this is what you want, follow PapaJohn's advice to download WMM 2.6.

In WMM 6.0 (the full Vista version), the sound will not change pitch.  It will speed up or slow down (e.g. slower or faster speed) while aiming to retain the audio pitch as much as possible.  So if this is what you want, consider installing WMM 6.0 on Windows 7.

The last option is to extract your audio from your video file, then use an audio editor (like Audacity which is freeware), to speed up/slow down your audio by the corresponding amount.  Finally manually add it back in as your "added music" track where you are speeding up/slowing down the video.  Audacity has options to change tempo and also change pitch or instead change tempo but retain pitch.  This is an advanced method and will require some conversion (e.g. ability to extract only the audio, change it in Audacity, add it to WLMM and resynch it, etc.).

So take your pick of workarounds.  If you'd like to suggest this as a feature in WLMM, go to the feedback.live.com site.

WLMM works that way by design. The 'work-around' is to use other software that doesn't mute the audio when a speed change is applied.

One such app on Windows 7 is Vista's MM2.6. Apply the slow down - half or speed up - double and the audio will change speed also. Custom xml effects can also be used to vary the speed by other factors.

Has this issue been resolved yet? Is there a work around to this?

    Hi flylizard,

Thank you for contacting Windows Live Global Escalations Team. About your concern, if the original clip has an audio along with the video - the program treats this as a 1:1 audio to video synchronization. This is the reason as to why it works fine when you have the setting of the video clip set at the actual speed (1x) since it reads the data of the clip as it is originally. Still, I am currently consulting this matter with our product experts to confirm with them whether by design, the program fuctions as it should be or if there is a workaround that can be applied with this scenario. I'll keep you posted as soon as I receive an update from them regarding the matter.

    Regards!

    Hi flylizard,

By default when you adjust the playback speed of a video in Windows Live Movie Maker the audio of the video will be removed and when you change it back to the default which is 1 the audio will be available again. I forwarded this information to our support group, in order to further investigate. We will let you know about any updates from them.

    Thanks,

    Windows Live Gerard G.
