Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community Forums.

We are here to help you and guide you in the right direction.

  1. When do you receive this error message?
  2. What is the exact/complete error message?
  3. Which games did you install on the computer?
  4. What is the make and model number of the computer?

Try these methods.

Method 1Check whether your video card is capable of using DirectX 10 or DirectX 11

If you are sure that your video card is capable then, reinstall DirectX.

Follow the steps mentioned below to check

a. Press windows key + R and type dxdiag.exe in the run box and press Enter.

b. Check whether there are any errors reported by the tool.

Method 2It might be that there is an issue with the directX installed on the system. I would suggest you to download and install the latest direct X version from the website mentioned below.

http://www.microsoft.com/games/en-us/aboutgfw/pages/directx.aspx

Method 3I would suggest you to update latest video card drivers on the computer and check if it helps.

a. Press Windows Key + R, type devmgmt.msc.

b. Expand the video card driver, right click on the drivers.

c. Click on properties, click on update tab.

d. Click OK.

e. Follow the on screen instructions and check if it helps.

Reply with more information to help you better.

    Hi Anil:

I get the exact same issue, but with Call of Duty Ghost. I went to the Steam community and found that many users of Ghost and Black Ops are having the same issue. According to Activision, they are looking into the problem as it "may" be a game programming issue.

    Hi RandyGinn,

    Thank you for the response.

Try installing the game in windows 7 compatibility mode and check.

    a.      Right-click on the game setup file.

    b.      Click on Properties and select the Compatibility tab.

    c.       Click the checkbox before Run this program in Compatibility mode for option and select Windows 7.

    d.      In the list-down box; then try installing the device driver via Run as administrator.

    Let us know the status.

    Anil,

thank you so much for the help above, but al have failed to solve my issue. When I go to load the DirectX download it tells me I already have the latest and wont let me reload or update it...

When I open a game (Call of Duty Black Ops) I get a message that reads "DirectX has encountered an unrecoverable error" and then it locks down and I have no option other than to exit the game....

Is there no way to remove and reload DirectX?

My computer is a brand new Dell OptiPlex 9010 with Windows 8 Pro
