USB serial com port shows error code 10

When I did a check up on my computer (OS Windows 7) this morning it said my USB serial port COM 3 would not start and had a code 10.  I went to the device manager and checked it and it said the same thing.  I clicked update drivers and it said I had up-dated drivers.  I plugged USB things into the USB and they worked fine.  I went back to device manager and it still has the yellow mark with the code 10.  How do I fix something that seems to be working properly?

Thanks,

Shirley

    Hi,

Have you made any recent software or hardware changes on the computer?

I would suggest you to run a System File Checker scan and check.

Check the link mentioned below for further guidance on System File Checker scan

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Note: You may be prompted to insert the Windows 7 installation DVD if any files are found to be missing or corrupted.

If the issue persists you may contact HP for any known issues and further information.

    Hi,

Yes I restarted the computer.  I contacted HP and was told the USB COM3 was on older model computers and since I have the new Touchscreen I don't have USB COM3 so I don't know why the health check up was saying the USB wasn't working or why it was listed in the device manager ands allowed me to uninstall it, but the USB's are all working.

    Thanks,

    Shirley

    Hi,

I ran the troubleshooter and FixIT and it said to uninstall the USB Serial Port COM3 driver and the USA Serial Converter and reinstall them.  I uninstalled both, but I cannot find anything showing me how to reinstall them.  I tried FixIt again and that didn't help.  Where can I locate the drivers to reinstall?

    Thanks,

    Shirley

    Hi,

The Code 10 error pertains mainly to hardware and device driver issues or to compatibility issues between hardware drivers and additional software that is installed in Windows. Therefore, we recommend that you troubleshoot these issues by focusing on device drivers, on device configuration issues, and on hardware compatibility issues. You might need to update the chipset drivers and the USB controller.

    Method 1:

Follow the article given below for more information. You may also run the FIXIT from the link provided.

Description of Code 10-related errors that Device Manager generates in Windows-based computers

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943104

    Method 2:

I would also suggest you to run the Hardware and Device troubleshooter and check.

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Open-the-Hardware-and-Devices-troubleshooter

Check if the issue persists or proceed to method 3.

    Method 3:

You may also try uninstalling the serial port and check. Open Device Manager, locate the serial port with the yellow exclamation mark, right click and uninstall. Reboot the computer and check.

Hope this helps and keep us posted.
