I need a better platform support statement than

"Bootable media created on any version of Windows can be run on any other version of Windows. The only thing that needs to match is the architecture of Windows Defender Offline and the OS of the infected machine".

Is NT 4 supported? W2K Pro and Server? W2K3 Server R2? Win XP? ...

Yes, that is what I'm saying.

Using WDO on a Windows version other than x86 XP (probably any SP), Vista, or Windows 7 would not be "supported" as a scenario. This tool is designed for consumers on consumer SKUs, not server SKUs and not older unsupported operating systems. It is based on a tool available to Enterprises.

Note that WDO may well work on the other systems as it looks for the Windows installation on the %system% drive and then scans. You are booting to the WDO image, not loading the OS. However, the engine and signatures (which are similar to what is in MSE) may not properly detect malware on a different version of Windows resulting in false positives, possible further damage, or missed malware.

Is NT 4 supported?

No

W2K Pro and Server?

No

W2K3 Server R2?

No

Win XP?

Yes to 32 bit, no to 64 bit

Vista and Windows 7, both 32 and 64 bit are supported.

Windows Server 2008 is not technically supported, though it would work as it and Windows 7 share the same base.

Windows 8 is not launched, so I can only speculate that it is supported.

Oh, I should add that the statement you quoted makes me crazy, too. I already asked the WDO Program manager to get that fixed as it is confusing and vague.

Just to be clear, this is for the target or 'scanned' systems, not the creation of the WDO media (CD/DVD/USB).

I believe you to be saying that WDO does not support standalone system scanning for anything "older" except XP SP3.

No support for scanning NT4, W2K Pro or Server, W2K3, even W2K8 Server.

This is contrary to how I read the support statement on the WDO page. Note the comment you made on the current statement -- that it is "confusing and vague". With your response to support, I agree.
