windows update error 0x8007041d

I have a system with Windows Pro SP/3 that is having issues with Windows Update. I cleaned the system of infections and when I was done, I found that Windows Update didn't work any more. IE works well with all other sites, but gets really slow when I try to bring up Windows Update. When I get the website up and scan for updates, I get and error about 'Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer'. I select register and it appears to download the files. But when it finishes the installation, I get a 0x8007041D error. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

This system was extremely infected (including the TCP/IP stack) when I got it. So, yes, there were several pieces of software used to clean it. I would have reinstalled the OS, but the original install disks have gotten lost.

    1. Ran the Microsoft FixIt and got the follow error:

"Unable to find a version of the runtime to run this application"

    1. This system was also infected with 'Best Antivirus Protection'. Once I removed the TrendMicro AV that was installed, I was able to get out the Best AV. Had to rebuild the WBEM repository after, as the security center was still reporting Best AV as still active. Once it was clean, installed Microsoft Security Essentials.
