Embed an XML file in MS Word (Office 365 Apps for Enterprise) throwing error. This was working until recent.

In Word,

1) Insert -> Object -> From File -> Browsed and select any XML file
2) Check the "Display as icon" checkbox and click OK button

This is displaying a popup as "The program used to create this object is xmlfile. That program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install xmlfile or ensure that any dialog boxes in xmlfile are closed."

I see the XML files are associated with XML Handler.

MSOXMLED.EXE is available in 2 path:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\OFFICE15
C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\OFFICE15

Tried associating both of them. On double click the files are opening in Internet Explorer but when I tried to embed the same files in Word I am getting above error.

I googled for this error message but couldn't find this question anywhere.

Did you search ”MSOXMLED.EXE“ in Search Box of Explorer? The following image is the screenshot of MSOXMLED.EXE on my environment with Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise installed.

Please choose one Office app, go to File > Account > Product Information, share us the version number and update channel.

Did you check this in "Choose default apps by file type"?
I set the XML Handler as the default app for .xml files, but this issue could not be reproduced.

I suggest you check this issue again if you choose Notepad as default app for .xml files.
