Problem with usbser.sys BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (fe)

Anonymous
2013-02-05T14:29:53+00:00

I have a problem when using any device that uses usbser.sys (cdc-acm driver).  I have tried a couple of different usb-serial converters that use this driver with the same problem.

If the device is attached during shutdown I get a BSOD with BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER (fe).  This only happens when I have a PCI video compression card attached at the same time (Dahua VEC8016HB).  If either the compression card or serial converter is disabled, the problem does not occur.

An analysis of the dump created points to usbser!RestartNotifyRead+0x73.

I suspect it might have something to do with the compression card, but at the same time I have found several posts on other forums with the same bugcheck signature without having this specific compression card (that I know of).

I have tried this on Windows 7 professional (32 and 64), server 2008R2, and Windows 8, all with the same problem.

Backing up to WindowsXP with an earlier version of the usbser.sys driver (version 5.1.2600.5512), does not have the same problem.

Just as a test, I used the older usbser.sys driver from WindowsXP on a Windows7 install, and it does not have the same problem.

I also tried a third part cdc-asm driver with no problem.

Anyone have something similar and any suggestions?

Thanks,

    Thanks for the response,

Yes, I've already looked at those two links.

The first link is for a hotfix that does not apply (when I try to install, it says it is not applicable for my version of windows).  Also this hotfix is for windows7 and server2008, but as I mentioned, I am having this same problem on Windows8.

Also the hot fix mentions changing some registry settings which are not present on my system. It looks like the settings it talks about changing apply to composite usb devices which is not the case with the usb to serial adapters I am having the problem with.

The second link is listing information I already have from the bugcheck analysis I posted.

    Thanks

    1.  I have tried on a PC that is joined to a domain, and one that is not. (same bug check signature in both cases)

    2.  Two of the computers I have used are listed below:

    Dell Optiplex 7010

OS Name    Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

    Version    6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

    Other OS Description     Not Available

    System Type    x64-based PC

    Processor    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

    BIOS Version/Date    Dell Inc. A05, 7/31/2012

    SMBIOS Version    2.7

    Windows Directory    C:\windows

    System Directory    C:\windows\system32

    Boot Device    \Device\HarddiskVolume1

    Locale    United States

Hardware Abstraction Layer    Version = "6.1.7601.17514"

Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    12.0 GB

    Total Physical Memory    12.0 GB

    Available Physical Memory    8.75 GB

    Total Virtual Memory    23.9 GB

    Available Virtual Memory    20.2 GB

    Page File Space    12.0 GB

    Page File    C:\pagefile.sys

    OEM

OS Name    Microsoft Windows 7 Professional

    Version    6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

    Other OS Description     Not Available

    OS Manufacturer    Microsoft Corporation

System Manufacturer    To be filled by O.E.M.

System Model    To be filled by O.E.M.

    BIOS Version/Date    American Megatrends Inc. 4.6.4, 8/12/2011

    SMBIOS Version    2.7

    Windows Directory    C:\Windows

    System Directory    C:\Windows\system32

    Boot Device    \Device\HarddiskVolume1

    Locale    United States

Hardware Abstraction Layer    Version = "6.1.7601.17514"

Installed Physical Memory (RAM)    4.00 GB

    Total Physical Memory    1.92 GB

    Available Physical Memory    1.30 GB

    Total Virtual Memory    3.83 GB

    Available Virtual Memory    3.16 GB

    Page File Space    1.92 GB

    Page File    C:\pagefile.sys

The driver does not use an installer (it is using the supplied Windows usbser.sys), so I don't think there is any kind of compatibility mode for supplied drivers.  We use an .inf file to associate the VID/PID of our device, (and other devices that we have tried) with the usbser.sys driver.

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your issue description I understand that, you have issues with USB devices.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. Don’t worry, we will certainly help you.

I would appreciate if you could answer the following question:

    1. Is your computer connected to a domain network?
    2. What is the make and model of the converter?

Let’s follow these methods and check if it fixes the issue.

Step 1: As it was working fine on XP Computer, let's install the convertor driver in compatibility mode(XP).

Make older programs run in this version of Windows

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows7/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

Step 2: Install the updated chipset drivers from the manufaturer website.

Hope this helps. If the issue persists or if you have any Windows related queries please get back to us. We are happy to help you.
